A whirlwind of colors and shapes provokes a primitive, emotional reaction in “Composition” by Jackson Pollock, one of the most important figures in 20th century art. Driven by inner turmoil which compelled him to paint, Pollock created a signature technique of fixing large canvases to the floor and densely pouring, dripping and flinging paint embedded with sand or glass onto them with passionately intense physical movement. Pollock (1912 – 1956), a pioneering Abstract Expressionist, revolutionized a style of painting in which the work has no identifiable parts or point of emphasis, and is painted with a stream-of-consciousness technique called psychic automatism.
